Sciatica explained: why the pain travels down your leg

Sciatica isn't a diagnosis so much as a symptom: pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, from the lower back through the hip and down the leg. Understanding why it happens is the first step to calming it down.

Where the pain comes from

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, and it exits the spine in your lower back. When a bulging or herniated disc, bone spur, or narrowing of the spinal canal compresses that nerve root, the result is the classic sciatica experience: sharp or burning pain, often with tingling or numbness, that can reach all the way to the foot.

Why "just rest" often doesn't fix it

Because the root cause is pressure on the nerve, simply waiting it out doesn't always resolve the underlying problem. Many people get temporary relief, only for the pain to flare again when the compression is still there.

How decompression targets the cause

IDD Therapy® spinal decompression works at the source: gentle, computer-guided stretching of the lower spine reduces pressure on the affected disc, which can give the irritated nerve room to recover. Sessions are comfortable, non-invasive, and typically painless — no medication, no injections, no downtime.

When to get evaluated

  • Pain that travels below the knee and lasts more than a few weeks
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Pain that keeps returning after temporary relief

If any of that sounds familiar, an evaluation can tell you whether a disc problem is the cause — and whether decompression is likely to help. Total Health Chiropractic, located in Coralville just minutes from Iowa City, offers IDD Therapy® as one of the only clinics in the area with this treatment available.
